Farhan Zaidi has begun to fill out his baseball operations staff. Though Zaidi, San Francisco’s new president of baseball operations, will likely spend this season without a general manager — the role he filled under Andrew Friedman with the Los Angeles Dodgers — he has brought in experienced hands to help in his collaborative process.
The Giants announced on Monday from the Winter Meetings in Las Vegas that they’ve added former major league general manager J.P. Ricciardi as Senior Advisor to the President of Baseball Operations, as well as Zack Minasian as the director of pro scouting and Michael Holmes as the director of amateur scouting.
Ricciardi, 59, served as the general manager for the Toronto Blue Jays from November 14, 2001 through the end of the 2009 season. Hespent the past eight seasons with the New York Mets as a Special Assistant to General Manager Sandy Alderson.
After coaching in Single-A and rookie ball for the Yankees and Brewers for three years, Ricciardi spent 16 seasons with the Oakland Athletics, beginning in 1986 as a New England area scout, while also serving as a minor league instructor. He became the A’s East Coast Scouting Supervisor following the 1992 season, and was named the club’s National Crosschecker in 1994. From there, he was promoted to Special Assistant to the General Manager in 1996, working under Alderson, and then Billy Beane. In 1999, he was appointed Director of Player Personnel.
His duties under Beane included major league scouting, trade evaluation and advising the baseball operations department, much the same as his duties are expected to be under Zaidi.
Minasian, 34, has spent the last 14 seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, most recently as a special advisor to scouting. For six years, he was the club’s professional scouting director, and also served as the manager of minor league scouting personnel and coordinator of pro scouting as the baseball operations assistant.
He got his start in baseball at the age of 11, working for his father, Zack Sr., the longtime clubhouse manager with the Texas Rangers. His brother, Perry, is an assistant general manager with the Atlanta Braves.
Holmes, 43, most recently held the title of Assistant Scouting Director for the Oakland Athletics, where he and Zaidi crossed paths. A former right-hander for Wake Forest, Holmes played four seasons in the A’s system from 1997 to 2000, then rejoined them as a scout in 2004. He was promoted to East Coast Crosschecker in 2006 and Assistant Scouting Director in 2009.
