Brewers pitcher Gio Gonzalez rolled his left ankle and came up limping heavily after jumping to knock down an infield chopper by Yasiel Puig. Even worse, had Gonzelez not knocked down the ball it would have gone straight to second baseman Jonathan Schoop.
Gonzelez stayed in the game for a pickoff attempt and another pitch, but when Austin Barnes squared around to bunt, Gonzalez limped noticeably again. Brewers manager Craig Counsell had no choice but to bring in rookie Freddy Peralta.
Peralta is making his post-season debut and hasn’t pitched since Sept. 24. Peralta missed the strike zone with his first three pitches. walking Barnes.
