Keston Hiura, ranked #6 overall, is lone Milwaukee Brewers representative in Baseball Prospectus top-101 prospects

Baseball Prospectus released its top-101 prospects list this morning, and just one Milwaukee Brewers farmhand made the cut. Although, that player landed in the top 10.

According to BP, Keston Hiura is baseball’s 6th best prospect. The prized second baseman continues to shoot up lists after spectacular performances in his first two seasons.

For those of you not aware, likely due to an effort to just ignore his existence or refusal to learn anyone in the farm system’s name for fear of further disappointment, Hiura is an already renowned hitter. Many scouts label his swing as one of the best in all of the minors and MLB ready. Just last week, MLB Pipeline released its top 2B list and gave him plus-plus hit tools with plus power, grades that signify a future MVP candidate and regular All-Star.

The one concern with Hiura has continually been his defense. Coming out of college, he was dealing with a small UCL tear that may have needed Tommy John Surgery. When the Brewers checked the injury after the draft, it had healed and Hiura was able to get right into the action without the procedure. He has proven to be an adequate defender, able to make routine plays with ease. Sometimes, his weaker arm may hamper him on tougher abilities, but no one should consider him a risk at second.

Hiura also showed off his ability in the Arizona Fall League, where he hit .323/.371/.563 with 5 home runs in 105 plate appearances. He would go on to win the MVP award, over baseball’s top prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

At just 22, Hiura should continue ranking very highly on the most popular top prospects list. If he continues to be the hot hand in the minors, it seems all but guaranteed that we will see him in Milwaukee this summer.
